Meshtastic in Basel

It started as a backup: a long-range LoRa radio network so my family could still reach each other if mobile networks went down, in a power outage, a natural disaster or on a remote trip. I was inspired by similar networks in places like St. Louis, Missouri, where tornadoes regularly knock out cellular coverage.

The deeper I went into the protocol, the more I liked decentralized mesh networking. It feels like a modern take on ham radio: encrypted, low-power and entirely open source.

Coverage

I’m part of the Swiss Meshtastic mesh and help it grow. It already stretches from Bern to Brig and from Zürich to Plaine Morte, for hikers, off-grid enthusiasts and anyone who values digital self-reliance. One day I’d like to bridge it to Milano. The Alps are in the way.

My nodes

  • Scruch Overland: a mobile node with GPS and solar power, mounted on my Jeep, so the network travels with me
  • Scruch RP: high balcony node for urban relaying
  • Scruch Base: indoor hub, always on, powered over USB
  • Scruch Test: indoor node for firmware tests
